The School of the Built Environment, University of Nottingham comprises the Institutes of Architecture, Building Technology, Sustainable Energy Technology and Urban Planning. Research in the School centres on four main areas - architectural humanities (history, theory, design and critical theory); building technology; sustainable technologies, and urban design.

The School is noted for its innovative workin green issues and sustainability, structural design, urban design, critical theory and architectural history. We have developed innovative technologies for heating, ventilation, heat recovery, cooling, power generation and lighting: several of these have been licensed to industry.

We have strong links with overseas institutions and are collaborating on EU-funded projects with organisations in Finland, Italy, Switzerland, Portugal, Poland and Germany. The School also has collaborative arrangements with universities in Asia, Africa, North and South America and Australia. We provide funding for students to attend conferences, seminars and training courses, both in the UK and abroad.

The School is a founder member of the Midlands Renewable Energy Technology Transfer, which develops and encourages technology transfer of renewable technologies from universities to industry.
