​Since 1994, Kimchi Festival has been a popular cultural tourism and festival held every October in Gwangju. The festival takes place in all areas near Gwangju Kimchi Town to promote the excellence of kimchi to the world, attracting tourists from Korea and abroad and fostering the kimchi industry.
Must-see events include academic seminars held by kimchi experts and researchers and exhibitions of kimchi from eight provinces, foreign kimchi, pickled and fermentation food from abroad, food made with kimchi, pickled vegetables and salted seafood, and history of kimchi in addition to cultural performing arts including Namdo Sori, Samul Nori, and Gossaum (match of two teams pulling on knotted ropes) and Madanggeuk (ground theater performance). Participatory events include kimchi making classes, Kimchi King Contest, Kimchi Cooking Contest, Kimchi Ingredients and Kimchi Bazaar, Open-air Food Market, etc.
