Model City was intended to be connected to the Niagra River via William T. Love's shipping lane canal. Soaring land prices, the Panic of 1893, and mismanagement of funds forced Love into bankruptcy. The "city," a collection of some roads and a few houses, and its canal were quickly abandoned. Love's Canal, as it was originally known, would later become a dump site for over 20,000 tons of toxic waste from Hooker Chemical Company (now Occidental) and America's largest environmental disaster.
