WCLV originally signed in 1975 on as WZLE-FM, a station airing "mellow gold" pop standards owned and operated by independent broadcaster Gene Sens. The station was sold to Lorain Christian Broadcasting in 1983 and flipped to a religious format. In 1999 the station moved its studios to downtown Cleveland and flipped formats to a Top 40 format under the name KISS 104.9, purchased by Clear Channel, and a brief fight ensued with Clear Channel over the KISS FM branding. As the quarrel ended the station briefly changed its call letters to WMTX before changing to WAKS, not to be confused with the station of the same call letters also in Cleveland. In the "Great Frequency Swap" of 2001 the station became WCLV-FM after Clear Channel sold the station to the nonprofit WCLV Foundation, changing the call letters to WCLV and the format to classical music. The WCLV Foundation was purchased by Ideastream Broadcasting in late 2012 making the station a non-commercial 24/7 classical station. The station would last in that format till October 1, 2021 when it changed its call letters to WCPN and became a repeater of Northeast Ohio NPR station WKSU.
