Plaque "Two Bridges"
After the liberation of the city of Groningen the Canadians wanted to push to Delfzijl through the Damsterdiep. For this, they had to cross the bridges over the Oostersluis and the van Starkenborg Channel. Commissioned by the Germans bridgekeeper Pop Dijkema had to unstop the bridges so the Canadians could not cross.
Under curtain-fire Pop, Jacob-Jan and Jan Dijkema turned one the bridge back down so the Canadians could cross.
Pop Dijkema was hit in the arm and soldier Roy Collin was killed.
