  • The dirt hillside below this emergency spillway was just dirt,, brush and trees. Several crevasses started eroding back towards the spillway and came close to causing the emergency spillway to fail which could send a thirty foot wall of water down the valley. Close to 200,000 people were ordered to evacuate.
