The 324,000 sq. ft. facility was originally constructed for the Electric Controller corporation, which produced industrial electric motors and magnetic plates. In 1954, the company was acquired by Milwaukee based Square D. Square D closed the plant in 1972 and moved its Crane Control Division to Columbia, south Carolina.
