airport, historic ruins
An entry in the flying calendar of Flying Magazine's January 1960 issue lists the Pancho Barnes Airport opening on January 1st at Gypsy Springs Ranch. Pancho and Mac moved here in 1956 after Barnes' Rancho Oro Verde property on Edwards AFB burned and planned on building an aviation resort here. Unfortunately, the surrounding environment couldn't support such dreams and the heady days of the Riding Club did not follow them here. Pancho eventually closed the airport and moved to Boron where she died alone on March 30, 1975.
