railway, summit, abandoned / shut down
The El Paso and Southwestern Railroad, owned by Phelps Dodge, completed their railroad line during February 1902, crossing the Continental Divide three times in 16 miles. This first crossing is at 4650'. The Southern Pacific bought the El Paso & Southwestern on November 1, 1924, and abandoned this line on December 20, 1961, and the tracks were torn up during 1963. America's railroads built 31 crossings over the Divide, of which 10 other crossings remain in use.
