railway, summit
The Union Pacific Railroad Sunset Route transcontinental mainline crosses the Continental Divide here at Wilna at an elevation of 4584'. This is the lowest of the transcon rail lines crossing the Divide. The line was built by the Southern Pacific Railroad during 1881. Amtrak's Sunset Limited passenger train travels on this line, connecting Los Angeles and New Orleans. America's railroads built 31 crossings over the Divide, and this is one of 10 that are still in use.
