Originally built to support the large amount of air traffic moving through RCAF Station Winisk airfield in support of construction of the Mid-Canada Line and the Distant Early Warning (DEW) Line of radar stations, this two-story control tower saw continued use after the closure of the Air Force Base in 1965 as the airfield transitioned to a civilian role for the people living in nearby Winisk.

Operating through the aftermath of the disastrous floods of 1986, the control tower and airfield were abandoned as the town of Winisk itself was abandoned and has remained unused since. Today the tower has been badly damaged by the elements and is slated for eventual demolition and site remediation in the near future.
