Homestake Uranium Mill Site

Site of the Homestake Uranium Mill which operated from 1958 to 1990. It was originally approved by the Atomic Energy Commission to produce concentrated uranium yellowcake for nuclear weapons. In 1971, ownership was transferred into private hands.

The site was decommissioned in 1995. Two tailings ponds remain containing approximately 22 million tons of tailings. The larger 200 acre pond is over 100 feet tall. Contamination of nearby groundwater remains an issue.
