This land was originally operated as a farm by Willam A. Cadwell. The land was sold to the Hartford Water Commision who bought even more land from Cadwell after the reservoir was formed due to contamination from Cadwell's farm animals. The last of the land was bought from Cadwell in 1886.

This was originally known as Reservoir No. 4 since it was the fourth reservoir built by the Hartford Water Commision. The reservoir was connected to Reservoir No. 1 to the north by a series of canals which was quickly changed to pipe due to flooding problems associated with the construction of the canal. This reservoir was fed by a series of canals which connected the reservoir to Dead Swamp at the base of Rattlesnake Mountain. The canals are still visible today.

Today, Batterson Park Pond is owned by the city of Hartford. New Britain maintains the boat launch on the southern end of the pond. Most of the pond lies in Farmington, only the Eastern shore, and about 50 feet into the pond lies in New Britain.
