Called "Mishenipsit" by the original local tribes, popular usage has shortened the name of this beautiful lake to "Shenipsit" by the nineteenth century, to "Snipsic" by the twentieth, and it's been long referred to by local yokels as "the Snip".

The site of popular and well-appointed picnic grounds and an excursion steamer in the nineteenth century, the lake is still popular for recreational uses such as swimming and fishing (and particularly ice fishing), and, as it is the reservoir for Rockville's drinking water, many of its shores have remained pristine and natural.

  • While swimming may be a popular use, the fact that it is a reservoir means that the Connecticut Water Company takes a very dim view of those caught enjoying this particular benefit.
