In the March-April months of 1660 Shahistakhan, a Mughal general and maternal uncle of Aurangzeb attacked Shivaji Maharaj's territory. At that time Shivaji Maharaj has got stuck in Panhala as it was surrounded by Siddi Jauhar. His Chief in Army, Netaji Palkar was fighting in that region and was trying to create military pressure on Adilshahi so that Shivaji Maharaj will get relief from Siddi Jauhar's pressure and can come out of Panhala. But the regions near Rajgad - Pune were completely open for invasion by Shahistakhan's Mughal army. At this point of time Jijabai Saheb(Shivaji Maharaj's mother) was present at Rajgad and had small contingets of army at her disposal. She deployed this army for raids and guerilla attacks on Mughal army.
Garade khind is a place where first of such attacks was effected by this small maratha army. Shahistakhan found it difficult to deal with them and got irritated and pissed off due to harassment caused by them. Hence instead of staying in nearby region he travelled to Pune and got settled in the Pune city.
