The Biomedical Engineering programme was first started in 1997, under the auspices of the Dean’s office. Four years later, as the rank of staff starts to swell, we managed to break off from the care of the Dean’s office and form our own department. The years beginning from the late 1990’s to the early 2000 were challenging times where as various changes has occurred in the education system, be it for better or for worse.
The original intake of 1997 to 1999 (three batches) were taken straight from form 5 where they had to study one year of preparatory course and three years of undergraduate studies. The 2000 and 2001 intake (two batches) on the other hand had to study 4 years on top of the foundation year. The 2002 intake was the first batch of students from the STPM / matriculation intake which is still maintained to this day.
It must be noted that under the leadership direction given by very senior professors (Prof. Ir. Dr. Wan Abu Bakar Wan Abas and YB Prof. Dato’ Dr. Goh Sing Yau), we managed to grow in strength throughout the years and have managed to obtain full accreditation for the 3+1 (3 years of engineering studies + 1 year of foundation studies) system, the 4+1 (4 years of engineering studies + 1 year of foundation study) system as well as the 4 years system.
There are many different taxonomic breakdowns within biomedical engineering such as bioinformatics, biomaterials, biomechanics, tissue engineering, neuroengineering and physiological measurements. The aim of the department is to produce professional engineers who are able to make technical decision in biomedical engineering field.
The department also established a research center and specialized research laboratory in 2008. Center for Applied Biomechanics (CAB) and Medical Informatics and Biological Microelectromechanical Systems (MIMEMS) Laboratory are formed to enhance research activities in this department.
