archaeological site, Medieval / Middle Ages, ancient ruins

The ancient Roman and Byzantine town of Mokissos (later called Ioustinianoupolis after the emperor Justinian) is located on the northern slopes of Mount Hasan, just south of the modern village of Helvadere. The area is littered with ruins (many of them dating from more recent times), and is known as Viranşehir, "Ruined City".
Note that the older identification of Mokissos with Kırşehir, while still often referenced, is now considered disproved.
