Two 5" pedestal mount guns were mounted here from 1902 to 1920.

Battery Cross was named on March 30, 1903 in honor of Captain Charles E. Cross, U.S. Engineers, brevet colonel, U.S. Army, who was killed June 5, 1863 at the battle of Fredericksburg, Virginia.
