The "Slottsfjellet", meaning "Castle Mountain" in norwegian, is northeren Europe's largest Ruin-park. Built around the 12th century, this medieval fortress was razed to the ground in 1503.

The fortress housed norwegian kings such as Håkon Håkonsson and is famed for the story about princess Kristina.

The Tower standing today was erected in 1888 on the site of the old wooden tower, erected in 1856, and is today Tønsbergs most famous landmark. The tower itself bears the inscription of the 3 latest norwegian kings and stands 63 meter above sea-level (mountain base included)
