The Worthington Inn restaurant and banquet will close at the start of the new year, making way for a smaller ground-level restaurant as well as office and retail space. The restaurant’s final day of business will be Monday, Dec. 31.
The Worthington Inn was constructed in 1831, initially operating as a private residence. The property has functioned as a restaurant since 1852, when it was called the Bishop House, and it’s since changed hands and names three times. In its 188-year history, the Worthington Inn has survived a fire and undergone a handful of renovations, including the addition of a third floor ballroom and Victorian facade in the early 1900s.
The Showe family purchased and renovated the property 35 years ago, and it’s become a local destination for private parties. The kitchen is known for its homemade offerings, including bread, ice cream, sorbet, sauces, soups and desserts.
“The first, second and third floors of the building will be renovated with working fireplaces, abundant natural light, wood plank flooring and generous ceiling heights,” read a post on the Worthington Inn’s Facebook page on Wednesday.
A reopening date has not been announced.
