Designed in 1944, the Seehund (Sea-Dog) is a German 2-man coastal defense Submarine intended for use shallow waters. Found to be highly successful against Allied merchant and Naval shipping as its small size and quiet motor were all but impossible to detect on ASDIC or Sonar systems of the time, the Seehund arrived too late in the Second World War to have any appreciable effect.
The Seehund on display at the New Jersey Naval Museum was captured by American forces and taken as a war prize. Following an evaluation period with the US Navy, the submarine was turned over for display at the museum.
