Stewart International Airport (IATA: SWF, ICAO: KSWF) is located west of Newburgh, New York, in the southern Hudson Valley, 55 miles (88.5 km) north of New York City and, 15 miles (23 km) southwest of Poughkeepsie, NY .

Originally developed in the 1930s as a military base to allow cadets at the nearby United States Military Academy at West Point to learn aviation, it has over the years grown into the major passenger airport for the mid-Hudson region and continues to serve as a military airfield as well.

Currently housing the 105th Airlift Wing flying C-5A x13 Galaxy aircraft of the New York Air National Guard. During the Hurricane Katrina relief operations, 105th flew the 12 missions delivering about 1.5 million pounds of cargo and 400 passengers in support of the relief effort. Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 452 (VMGR-452) of the United States Marine Corps Reserve. The space shuttle could also have landed at Stewart in an emergency.

  • On Jan 25th, 2006 the Port Authority of NY & NJ announced that they are purchasing Stewart Aiport for a 93 year lease in order to modernize and expand its facilites to alleviate the congestion at NYC's three airports, JFK, Newark & LaGuardia.
