Memorial Park was originally acquired in 1943 by the Spring Garden Memorial Park Association. The 124 acre park was located in both Spring Garden Township and the City of York. In 1953 Memorial Park was transferred to the City of York. Significant in the parks history was the influence and philanthropy of Bob Hoffman. Bob Hoffman was known as the Father of World Weight Lifting and was the founder of York Barbell Corporation.
