archaeological site, Medieval / Middle Ages, interesting place, promontory fort, iron age

The so-called "Green Castle" was built on a naturally well-defended promontory on the northern edge of what is now Portknockie in the early Iron Age, perhaps as early as 1000 BC. Much later the Picts re-fortified the site with an elaborate timber-laced wall, and built a hall-house within. The fort appears to have been inhabited until about AD 1000. Although many features are still traceable, they are largely overgrown with grass.
