Construction began on this house circa-1864. The original adobe house was expanded in 1886 and several times thereafter to accommodate the fifteen children of Sam and Atanacia Santa Cruz Hughes. The main part of the house originally had a zaguan with circulation from room to room. A rock foundation was added to the entire house by Mrs. Hughes in 1934.
