Holmes Elementary School was established in 1957 and is named after Dr. Stanley H. Holmes who was the superintendent of the New Britain School District from 1906 through 1937. Dr. Holmes was born on February 4, 1866 in Augusta, Maine; he passed away on Saturday, March 27, 1938. After twenty-five years of service to the New Britain School District a reception was given in his honor at which time he was given an honorary Degree of Doctor of Education by the Rhode Island College of Education in recognition of his exceptional service to public education.
