The Centre is established in recognition of the importance of the Malaysia in academic research and the expertise of Southern University College staff in this field. The Centre aims at promoting and developing multi-disciplinary research on Malaysia, primarily in the areas of politics, media, education, social and cultural issues. By carrying out research into the qualities which make for an academic institution, the Centre aims to promote national, regional and international discourse between academics interested in the study of Malaysian issues. It conducts seminars and workshops, sometimes in conjunction with other centres. It also aims to increase opportunities for students to discuss and exchange ideas with experts in the field.
