The South Platte River is a major tributary of the Platte River and is approximately 440 miles long (Platte River only 310 miles).
The river is formed in Park County, Colorado, southwest of Denver. The South Platte was originally called the Rio Chato. In 1702, it was named the Rio Jesus Maria. The river is well known for its wild trophy population of Brown Trout and Rainbow Trout.
