The Great Neck House was originally designed c. 1905 by Foster, Gade & Graham as the Great Neck Free Library with funds from Mrs. Roswell Eldridge. In 1910, she donated a stained glass window Oxford, New Castle for the east side wall. In 1934, a della Robbia was donated to the library by Mrs. Houston. Due to WWII threats, dim-out curtains put on windows and skylights painted so no light could get through and the basement was turned into a fallout shelter. Later alterations were made by Walter E. Blum.

In 1974, the Great Neck Park District purchased the building from the library and reopened it as the focus of the district's cultural activity.
