"Novo-Salem" in Russian. About 3.2 sq.mi., or 2051 acres. First settlement colony founded in 1911 by Spiritual Christian Molokane and Pryguny immigrants from Novo-Salem village, Kars Oblast, Russian Empire, now named Salim, Republic of Turkey. The 2 faiths, some intermarried, traveled in groups as economic and refugee immigrants. Most arrived via the immigration port of Galveston, Texas, and traveled by train to Los Angeles, then San Francisco, were they may have met the land agent who arranged the sale of land. When colonists realized they could not prosper here, they divided, with most Molokane moving to Potrero Hill, San Francisco; and most Pryguny to northeast of Tolleson, Arizona, founding their second Novo-Salem colony, near 3 other similar Spiritual Christian colonies from the Southern Caucasus.
