Karaağaç (Qarağaç )

Turkey / Kahramanmaras /

Karaağaç (Qarağaç) was an ancient Kilikya Armenian village-hamlet of 70 households [census of 1895] of the Zeytoun Kaza' of Maraş Sancaq , part of Avakgal village Kehyalik or cluster of villages ( now Avcılar ), settled around 1100 A.D. until 1895 A.D.; this hamlet's Armenians were farmers, agriculture workers, lumberjacks and shepherds and the village was situated about 5km SW of Zeytun; the entire hamlet was looted, plundered and razed in 1862 and in 1895 by Turkish and Çerkes başibozuk çeteler [criminal bands] that were intent on destroying the Armenian christians of Zeytun district in the 2nd half of the 19th century and early 20th century. As a result of these attacks, the surviving Armenians of this tiny hamlet migrated en masse to find refuge and settle in Zeytun town in 1895 October, and some remained there until the forced deportation of all Armenian christians of Zeytun county in April/May 1915. This hamlet was never rebuilt and all that remains are elm tree woods and ancient graveyards around it.
Some old Armenian family names from the village of Karaağaç are: Kocayan (Kodjayan) , Aşıkyan (Ashikian), Gökçıyan (Gökdjuyan), Küçükyan (Kütchükian) ...
