Toward the end of the 1800's, the City of LA decided a tunnel cut through Fort Moore Hill was necessary to extend Broadway and alleviate traffic congestion problems in that corner of the city. The Broadway Tunnel was completed in 1901, with the North entrance existing at what is now Broadway and Cesar Chavez Ave. making traffic flow easier for horse and buggy teams, automobiles, and pedestrians. It was one of the largest traffic tunnels in the US in these days. The tunnel and Fort Moore Hill were both completely obliterated for construction of the Hollywood Freeway in 1950.
