The 2015 Mina crush ocurred on September 24 at the intersections of Street 204 and Street 223. Over two thousand were killed in the disaster during the annual pilgrimage. The pilgrims were en route to and returning from the Jamaraat Bridge to take part in the Stoning of the Devil rite. The cause for the crush is disputed, with eyewitness accounts saying Street 206 was closed suddenly. It is believed that the unexpected closure caused two crowds of people to divert into each other.
Official death tolls vary by source. An Associated Press tally in December 2015 recorded 2,411 killed. The official death toll by the Saudi government is 769 as of September 26, 2015. Many foreign governments such as India, Pakistan, and Indonesia disagree with the official Saudi count.
