The Ebenezer Hancock House is located along the Freedom Trail, just past Faneuil Hall. The building is the only dwelling still standing in Boston that can be associated with John Hancock.

Prior to being the residence of John Hancock’s younger brother, this location was formerly the home to first town crier of Boston, a William Courser. Ironically, located just down the street at the intersection of Marshall Street and Union Street on the site of the Bell In Hand Tavern, was the former residence of the “final” town crier of Boston.

From 1767, however, this 3-story redbrick building was home to John Hancock’s brother, Ebenezer. Ebenezer was the Deputy Postmaster General of the Continental Army. In layman’s terms this means that his house was where troops went to collect their pay. For many years after Ebenezer resided here (1798-1963 to be more specific) this building was the site of oldest continuously operated shoe store.

Since 1979 the building has been a lawyer’s office which it remains to this day.
