After WWII, electric appliance maker Electromaster, constructed a factory at 151 Lafayette Street, to produce electric ranges. Shortly thereafter, in 1949, Electromaster was acquired by Philco, which was, in turn, acquired by Ford Motor Company in 1957.

Ford converted the plant to make vinyl products for its automobiles. The original plant was expanded and a portion of Lafayette Street was closed. In 1964, Ford erected a $10 million paint plant on the northern part of their 53 ac. lands. An addition followed in 1973.

Following Ford's decision to exit the component business, the Mt Clemens Vinyl Plant was sold to DuPont's Performance Coatings Division in 1996. Carlyle Group, the present owner through its Axalta Coating Systems division, purchased the plant from DuPont in 2012. At present the company employs approximately 530 workers making coatings for automobiles.
