Original Dewey Bridge (site)

USA / Utah / Castle Valley /
abandoned / shut down, bridge, suspension bridge

One-lane suspension bridge. Built to carry vehicles. Now a pedestrian/bicycle bridge. The Dewey bridge is a 502 feet (153 m) bridge that carried SR-128 across the Colorado River. The Dewey bridge was completed in 1916 and closed to automobile traffic in 1988 when its replacement opened. The bridge consists of 2 metal towers, an all wood deck, 2 runs of 7 cables on either side of the bridge deck, and concrete cable anchors. The bridge was designed to support the weight of 6 horses, 3 wagons, and 9000 pounds of freight. As the bridge deck is only 8 feet (2.4 m) feet wide, many wider vehicles had to fold in mirrors in order to safely cross the bridge. Signs directed eastbound traffic to yield to westbound traffic and for only one automobile to be on the bridge at a time. According to a plaque on the west approach of the bridge, on the day of its completion it was the 2nd longest cable suspension bridge in the US west of the Mississippi River. The bridge remains the longest suspension bridge in Utah. Photo taken from Roberts Mesa (to the east): www.pbase.com/listorama/image/54775954/medium.
