Wall Springs

A weak freshwater spring surrounded by the historical foundation of a once bustling historical swimming park. Currently the spring is very weak, carrying water from Florida's underground aquifer. Since the surrounding area has become suburbanized, permeable sand surfaces have partially disappeared to feed and filter nutrients the underground water supply. Springs are formed from naturally-occuring acid leaching through the calcareous limestone (ancient sea-bottom). Sprinkler wells, used for watering lawns, have also significantly contributed to some depletion of groundwater. Added nutrients (N) nitrogen, (P) phosphorous, and (K) potassium, feed algal and bacteria blooms degrading groundwater supply.

Saltwater intrusion is the most significant threat to coastal springs and the "freshwater lens" that lies beneath many islands. As fresh groundwater is pumped out, the void is filled with salty sea water, contaminating once potable supplies.

Wall Springs is now encompassed by a Pinellas County Park.

Well Springs, has been resurrected as a wonderful park by Pinellas County, free entry, a fantastic children's play area, designated picnic areas and enclosures and a fine system of walkways and bridges through the woods to the bay. Easily explorable in a few hours or less, great out of the way park both in Summer and Winter!
