temple, place with historical importance, archaeological site
The ancient and medieval city of Tralles (Tralleis) was located on a plateau north of modern Aydın. The site is large but badly effaced by cultivation, and much of the area (including the ancient agora) is restricted as part of a military facility. The acropolis, theater, and stadium are located in the north, but feature relatively few surface remains. Some sections of the ancient walls are preserved in the northwestern and northern edges of the old fortified perimeter. A late Roman gymnasium complex and other buildings have been excavated in the southwestern portion of the site.
