Originally it was opened as a tuberculosis hospital. It was then taken over by the Kalamazoo Psychiatric Hospital in the early 1970s and called the "Northwest Unit". It was abandoned in 1990. Western Michigan University now owns the property (for reasons unknown to the general public) and it is frequented by neighborhood hooligans.

  • we used to explore this place back in 93. crazy vibes
  • This is a very spooky looking place. All overgrown with an imposing stance on a hill overlooking the city.
  • Can anyone thats been here before tell me what its like? Me and a group of people want to go explore this place this summer. So any information please let me know
  • Approaching the building is possibly one of the creepiest things I've ever done; it's extremely overgrown, and flood lights cast eerie shadows in front of the broken-glass dilapidated building. Inside is just as bad. It looks as if Vikings went on a pillage here. If you do go, bring pepper-spray in case you encounter an angry bum, a flashlight, gloves/long sleeves/jeans, and keep an eye out for the restraining bed. Happy exploring :)
  • WMU bricked up the windows and doors for the bottom levels. People have broken through the walls, and WMU in return repaired the damage, but long story short sometimes it is harder to get inside than other times.
  • apparently wmu has also placed motion sensors inside the building. personally i didn't see any, but somehow or another we got caught and had to do community service, so i wouldn't doubt it if they did
