The Store-houses, cranes and quay walls were known as Royal Alexandra Yard; the steps here from the water are still known as Alexandra Steps as King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra landed here in 1885. The quay-walls were built from limestone quarried on the island, the cranes were used to transfer stores onto barges to be transported to the ships at anchor in the channel. This area remains very well preserved and is used today for offices and as a small boat shelter.
