Unofficial nude beach and cruising area. Primarily gay, this area isn't as exclusive as in past years due to the paved path that has brought a more prudish crowd down to the river flats area. Harrassment by Minneapolis police from 1995-2000 also contributed to the decline of the scene.

Update, June 2007: Since last fall, the city/park people bulldozed at least 95% of all small vegetation in the entire river flats area from the Franklin Ave bridge to the train bridge. Large trees are still standing and small plants are beginning to grow back, but otherwise the area has a post nuclear blast appearance.

Update, Feb 2010: The city again destroyed much of the vegetation in winter 2009 but not as badly as in 2007.

  • I left Minneapolis back in 2000, I returned to visit family and friends about 10 years later, so I was there in 2011 for a couple weeks, and encountered myself that all the good areas to hang out at night, like Bare-Ass Beach, which I remember back in the mid 90s, was to spot to hang with friends smoking a cig and having good time looking at all the guys walk by ;) Well, to my sad surprise, NOTHING like it was before, it is almost like some one was frantically determined to destroy the Bare Ass beach, or what was going on there, shame, the best years of my life and some of my best memories, are made there!
