Originally founded between the 4th and 6th century, the Aetos castle occupies a hill east of the homonymous settlement. In the Middle Ages it was the seat of a bishop, and in the 13th century became one of the strongholds of the despots of Epirus after a brief Frankish occupation. Around 1460 it was conquered by the Ottoman Turks. There are remains of several ruined structures, including wall segments and towers on the hill.
