Historic Renaissance Revival-style building constructed in 1887.

Along with the Old Post Office and the Old Executive Office Building, this structure was one of the most controversial public buildings in the architectural history of DC. When constructed it was criticized as being too grandiose and totally out of scale with the surrounding buildings. Detractors referred to it as "Meigs' Big Red Barn" after Montgomery C. Meigs, who oversaw its construction. Its massive center hall now serves as a popular venue for charity balls and fundraising events.
