Columbia Pictures Studio 1918-1970

USA / California / West Hollywood / North Gower Street, 1432
place with historical importance, film/video production studio/facility, historical layer / disappeared object

Originally a haphazard collection of small studios that came and went, know as "Poverty Row" or "Gower Gulch." Small studios would start and sell out or go bankrupt, or grow and move, there were literally dozens of companies that called this area their headquarters. In 1918 one of them began to emerge: CBC Pictures, whose name would change to Columbia Pictures.

Over the next 20 years or so, Columbia began buying up the smaller studios consolidated themselves into one large (14 acre) studio. In 1970 the company was bought by Coca Cola and moved to share Warner Brothers Burbank studio lot (renamed Burbank Studios),

This lot lay fallow until 1977 when it was bought by real estate developer Pick Vanoff and rebranded to that name. It became a rental studio. Today it is owned by Hudson Capital and has merged with its neighbor to the east. Today it is known as Sunset Gower Studios.

As you browse this area, remember that there was a lot of overlap in names and places and was in a constant state of flux.
