The Igreja de São Francisco (Church of Saint Francis) is the most prominent Gothic monument in Porto, Portugal, being also noted for its outstanding Baroque inner decoration. It is located in the historic centre of the city, declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
This is the most beautiful and rich example of gilded carving wood in Portugal.
The baroque richness of the gilded carving wood decoration from the 17th century to the middle of the 18th century, shows the exceptional work of Porto's woodcarvers.
Surprising is the contrast between the interior's luxuriant decoration and the severeness of the gothic structure.
