 church, monastery

The church of Santa Maria la Real is the temple of the ancient monastery, now converted into the parish church of Oia. The monastery was founded in the year 1137 and therein inhabited the monks of the region under the tutelage of Alfonso VII of Castile. The wealth of the monastery was mainly due to the generous Royal donations, with privileges on the representation of the parishes, taxes by the christening of ships at sea, on fishing with nets and the exploitation of Priories and farms on both banks of the River Minho .
