Mainpuri is a city and Nagar Palika in Mainpuri Block Mainpuri Tehsil in Mainpuri District of Uttar Pradesh. It is also the district headquarter of Mainpuri District. Mainpuri is a district of Agra division, Uttar Pradesh, bounded in the north by Etah District, in the east by Farrukhabad District and Kannauj District, in the south by Etawah District and in the west by the Firozabad District. The history of Mainpuri District may be traced back to prehistoric period. Mainpuri and the surrounding territory were part of the kingdom of Kannauj, but happened to split when the kingdom fell. During 1526, the town was conquered by the Mughal ruler, Babur and in the 18th century, it fell to the Marathas. Mainpuri and other parganas of the neighborhood continued to form part of the authority of the Nawab vizier of Avadh and were finally surrendered to the British in 1801. Mainpuri has an area of about 2,760 sq km and a population of 1.5 million. It receives an average rainfall of about 738 mm. The chief river is the Yamuna and other streams are the Kali Nadi, the Isan, the Arind or the Rind, the Sengar and the Sirsa.

Mainpuri District is a commercial center for agricultural products. It has industries which produce oil-seeds, potatoes, ground-nuts and peas. Major crops are barley, maize and pulses. Braj Bhasha, an oldest form of Hindi, is the common language of the people.
