Built in 1842 on what was then Rancho Arroyo de la Alameda, granted to Don Jose de Jesus Vallejo in 1846. Vallejo was a son of Spanish soldier Ignacio Vallejo and served as a comisionado and administrator of Mission San Jose between 1836 and 1840, and military commander of the Pueblo de San Jose from 1841 to 1842. In 1850, he became the postmaster of Mission San Jose. This adobe was the first of a number of Vallejo's adobes built in the area; several more were built were the old Vallejo flour mill ruins are located at the mouth of Niles Canyon.

The adobe was restored by the California Nursery Company in the 1930s as a tea house and guest house.
