San Carlos de Rio Negro is a city in Venezuela's Amazonas State. It serves as the administrative centre for the surrounding municipality of Rio Negro, a district inhabited largely by Amerindians, notably the Yanomami and Baniwa people.

The climate is humid and tropical, with annual average temperature of 26,6º C and a average precipitation of 3,633 mm/year.

The city was founded in 1759 at a camp made during a disastrous expedition led by José Solano. The plan was to establish land boundaries between the Crowns of Portugal and Spain as part of the Treaty of Madrid. Most of Solano's party, including the famous Swedish botanist Pehr Löfling, succumbed to tropical diseases, especially yellow fever.

Even today, reaching San Carlos de Rio Negro is not for the faint hearted. Unless you are happy to trek through dense jungle, beset by maddening, fearsome beasts and ghastly diseases, the town can only be reached by air and river. However, it is surrounded by one of the most biodiverse areas on Earth.
