Official Residence of the US Ambassador
US Embassy Compound
Moonah Place
Yarralumla, ACT, Australia
The foundation stone for the Ambassador’s Official Residence was laid jointly by Prime Minister John Curtin, Australian Senator Joseph Collings, Government Leader in the Senate, and America’s Minister, Mr. Nelson T. Johnson, on July 4, 1942. War-time shortages lengthened the construction time, but the building was occupied by Christmas 1943.
The Residence is built of brick laid in waterproof cement mortar and with rough ruled white joints.
All structural floors are reinforced concrete beam and slab construction, and are finished with Belgian black and Australian white marble in the entrance hall, sandstone in the solarium, jarrah parquetry on the rest of the main floor, tallow wood parquetry on the upper floor, and linoleum in the service areas. The portico columns and other stone trim are of Hawkesbury sandstone and the roof is of purple Bangor slate.
